DIY Fat Cakes

We’re one step closer to Spring but still experiencing a very cold February!

For this month’s challenge, we’re going to be helping our winter wildlife by providing some yummy treats for them. These are super easy to do, easy to make as a class or in your nature club and you can even customise them!

Here we go!

Add some seeds to either lard or vegetable fat – we’ve used soft vegetable fat in the photo above as it’s slightly better for birds but it suits our fat cakes as it’s soft and squishy ready to add the seeds. You can add any type of seed you wish! We’ve gone for a high protein millet and sunflower seed mix with some porridge oats thrown in for some extra substance.
Squash and mix it all together with a spoon or your hands until the mixture is mainly seeds sticking together.

It’s time to mould your fat cakes or fat balls!
We’ve gone creative and used a cookie cutter to make a little bunny shape, you can use cake pop moulds for rounded shapes or even roll them into a ball yourself. Once you’ve made your shapes, leave them in a cool place to harden or pop them in the fridge for a little while until harden.
Ensure they are hard if you are using them in fat ball feeders or fat cake feeders, if on bird tables they can be a little soft so your Jackdaws don’t run off with the whole thing!

And there you have it – easy peasy fat cakes for you to make!
